Andamooka OpalThe small township of Andamooka is situated 640kn north by road from Adelaide in South Australia. The last stretch of road is dirt and still becomes impassible to two-wheel-drive vehicles after heavy rains. Andamooka opal was first discovered in the 1930's in the way of floaters. Until 1972, Andamooka was a major producer of precious opal. Output often equaled and occasionally exceeded in value that of Coober Pedy. Much of the precious opal in the Andamooka mining fields has been found quite shallow and thus the majority of opal mining is carried out with excavators and bulldozers via open cut. Underground mining also takes place in the search for beautiful Andamooka opal, but to a lesser extent. View Australian Opal from other mining areas within Australia.
