More recently however, it has been demonstrated that the regular array of spheres which make up the opals diffract white light by breaking it into the complete range of spectral color. Blue and blue green opal is made up of smaller spheres than red colored opal. If the spheres are too small, light passes through without being diffracted. The end result is clear 'potch'.
