Coober Pedy OpalWorld renowned Coober Pedy Opal is both beautiful and varied. Situated 900km north of Adelaide in South Australia, the remote Australian outback town of Coober Pedy has a population of around 3,000 people. Beautiful solid opals and opal fossils including sea shells, snails and belemnites have been mined in and around Coober Pedy since the early 1900's.
Coober Pedy produces the largest amount of precious opal of all the Australian opal mining areas. Most of these gems are cut and polished, then set into beautiful opal rings, pendants and other jewelry. Coober Pedy opal has and continues to be very much in demand on the global gemstone market.
The name Coober Pedy is derived from the Aboriginal words 'kupa' meaning white man and 'piti' meaning hole or burrow. The name 'kupa piti' or white man's hole or burrow, refers very accurately to the underground habit of opal miners in dugouts.
