Lightning Ridge OpalsLightning Ridge and it's surrounding areas produce the world's only supply of black opals (also known as black fire opal). Most of these gemstones are found as nobbies, although black opals are also found in seam. A nobbie looks just like any other rock and most are a grayish- blue color. It's not until the nobbies are chipped that they reveal their hidden treasure of black fire opal.
The miners collect large amount of opal bearing level and wash it for long periods in giant tumblers (even cement-mixer trucks are known to be used). Once the dirt has been washed away leaving the nobbies, each one must be chipped to reveal whether it's only black potch, or if there's a beautiful Lightning Ridge fire opal gemstone hidden inside. These gemstones are then cut into solid opals and mounted into rings, pendants, earrings and other types of jewelry.
