Mintabie OpalIn contrast to the other opal mining fields found in South Australia, the Mintabie opal area is thickly vegetated with mulga and mallee trees. Large bulldozers are used for the majority of the opal mining in these areas, as the opal bearing levels below can often be as hard as concrete. The ground is often drilled and blasted and then the bulldozers move in. Checkers walk behind these giant machines looking at the upturned sandstone that may contain the precious opals. The sandstone is sawn to remove the opal from within it. Often a small amount of the very hard, almost white sandstone is left on the back of Mintabie solid opals to identify they did indeed come from the Mintabie opal mining fields.
