Opal Belemnites Pipes Ancient SquidBelemnites roamed the oceans of the world between 65 and 210 million years ago. They strongly resembled their living relatives of today, the squid and the cuttlefish right down to the ink sack and 10 tentacles. Most opal belemnites (pipes) and opal fossils are found in and around Coober Pedy, South Australia.
The formation of opal belemnites began when belemnites died and were buried below sand and silt at the bottom of the inland sea that covered much of southern and eastern Australia, millions of years ago. When the belemnites decayed they left cavities that were later filled with the silica rich waters from the inland sea that produced today’s opal. Fossilized opal belemnites are a delight for rock hounds and collectors. They also make absolutely stunning and unique pendants.
